The Villages covers over 32 square miles and occupies a portion of Lake, Sumter, and Marion Counties in Central Florida with all recreation, social, and commercial venues North of SR-44 accessible by golf cart along over 90 miles of golf cart paths. While villages South of SR-44 are connected to those contiguous villages to the north by "bridges, tunnels, and golf cart paths," travel by golf cart beyond SR-44 is unrealistic. 

The Villages has over 150,000 residents. It is the 17th largest municipality in Florida and larger than 50% of Florida's counties. Moreover, The Villages is the largest active adult community in the country registered as a 55+ community.

The Villages north of SR-44 is comprised of 15 contiguous "special purpose municipalities" called Community Development Districts. Twelve of the CDDs are residential, each with about 4,000 homes, and 3 are commercial districts with each containing a town square with free nightly entertainment, restaurants, and an abundance of shopping. There is also an Independent Utility District  

The Village is 45 miles northwest of Orlando and 75 miles northeast of Tampa in Central Florida. It is 40 miles from the Gulf Coast and 70 miles from the Atlantic Coast.

The Villages is known as the Pickleball Mecca with over 100 pickleball courts. There are over 100 tennis courts, including eight Har-Tru soft clay courts.

The Villages is the largest single-site golfing community in the world with 13 Championship Golf Clubs and 11 Country Clubs (open to non-villagers) and 41 Executive Golf Courses where residents can play golf free for the rest of their lives.

The Villages' commercial amenities are open to the public. There are 3 town squares with free nightly entertainment, over 100 restaurants, an eight-screen multiplex movie theater, two state-of-the-art bowling facilities, two performing arts centers, a continuing education college, public libraries, a regional hospital and medical center, and much more. 

Many of The Villages lakes/ponds allow shoreline, catch-and-release fishing and are stocked with Florida freshwater species, including largemouth bass, bluegills, sunfish, catfish, and crappie.

The Villages Regional Hospital is currently one of the fastest-growing acute care hospitals in the nation and still growing.

The Villages is an age-restricted retirement community for which at least one person in a household living in The Villages must be 55 or older. No one under the age of 19 may permanently reside in The Villages. You may have visitors for no more than 30 days per visit. The average age in The Villages for men is 62 and for women is 60.

There are over 90 different villages (contiguous neighborhoods) within The Villages north of SR-44. Villages range in size from 100 homes to 1550 homes. The Village of Duval is the largest with 1550 homes.

Neighborhood Scout's analysis of property crime reveals that the property crime rate in The Villages ranks among the lowest in the nation, making it a very safe place to live. Each of the three counties occupied by The Villages has a sheriff substation with regular patrols.

The Villages Public Safety Department (VPSD) includes EMS/EMT and Fire Departments services strategically located throughout the community. The Villages has 9 fire stations. The Villages Public Safety Department has over 150 full-time employees, about 70% are trained medics and 30% are trained EMTs. During 2021 the VPSD responded to 18,863 medical related emergencies and 6,176 fire related responses.

The Adult Watch Program is a service provided for residents that live alone or residents with a partner who needs someone to give them a call to make sure they are in good standing.

Lake Shore Drive

The Villages Recreation and Parks manages 15 solfball fields in 5 locations. The fields are available on a first-come basis during non-league times and can be rented for special occasions and tournaments. The Villages Solfball Program is highly dependent on the help from volunteers.

The Villages Community Watch patrols over 80,000 miles of neighborhood streets each month while averaging more than 3.5 passes by everyone's home every 24 hrs.

The Major Center of Activity in The Villages is north of CR-466A where Lake Sumter Market Square and Spanish Springs Town Square are located. Of the over 100 recreation centers operated by The Villages Recreation Department, 31 are located north of CR-466A.

The Villages has its own Charter School for the children of employees of The Villages and employees of businesses located within The Villages proper, allowing a student to attend from Pre-K3 thru High School. The Villages Charter School is an A-rated High School with 99% of students graduating. Ninety-three percent of students advance to higher education.

The Villages Leads the Nation in Key Social Measures: Maturity, Marriage Rate, and Home Ownership. The Villages Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) has the highest percentage of married residents at 64.2 percent. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's Community Survey, the median age of Villager is 67 years old. It's the most mature community in the Nation. Moreover, The Villages has more veteran residents (17.3%) of any MSA not adjacent to a military installation. About 54% of Villagers are female and 46 percent are male.
